Dog Arthritis signs and symptoms

Several recent studies confirm treating osteoarthritis in dogs involves a three step approach:

  • moderate exercise
  • diet to control weight
  • anti inflammatory treatments.
  • Even if he's a young dog, if he's showing signs of lameness he could have arthritis from injury or trauma to joint tissue.

  • Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of lameness in dogs.
  • Old age is not a reason to ignore lameness.
  • The bigger and heavier the dog, the more likely it is he'll get arthritis as he ages.
  • Osteoarthritis in older dogs is often ignored or not treated properly.
  • The truth is, older dogs can look forward to months or years of quality living if you treat them as you'd treat a younger dog.

The goal is to counteract the effects of inflammation, and if possible slow down its progression, while helping the joint to heal.

Dog Arthritis - Signs and Symptoms

You love him as much as ever, but you can't ignore he's aging. Your doggie companion is slowing up. Getting up after he's been lying down is an effort. He's reluctant to go for walks. He can't chase sticks anymore. He doesn't climb on the sofa like he did when he was a frisky puppy.

He can't talk, so he needs you to look for signs of joint pain and arthritis symptoms.

    He or she may:

  • become violent or aggressive or yelp - or be quiet withdrawn and inactive
  • ears may lie flat against his head
  • lick the affected area
  • show other personality changes. A normally docile dog may become aggressive
  • suffer stiffness, limping, decreased activity, unwillingness to go for walks.
  • He's probably suffering from dog arthritis, the most common cause of lameness in dogs. Years of activity have damaged the joint cartilage, usually in the hips or spine.

The result? Joint inflammation, swelling, stiffness and pain.

Arthritis results from the erosion of cartilage lining the joints.

Because there are no nerves in cartilage, a lot of damage can occur before the surrounding joint tissues become inflamed and cause lameness.

The earlier the diagnosis, the greater chance of healing.

Hip dysplasia can also cause arthritis.

The abnormal joint leads to instability, which the body tries to solve by forming new bone around the joint. However, it does not stabilise, and causes pain and inflammation.

Dogs with arthritis of the spine develop new bone and inflammations most likely as a result of degeneration of the intervertebral disks, the cartilage shock absorbers in between each vertebrae.

Alternative therapies like bee venom therapy (the therapeutic use of bee products), diet, and supplements and herbs all play a part in the care of dogs with arthritis.

Happy Families has combined traditional bee venom therapy with modern research to produce a new category of dietary supplements for joint health in aging dogs containing active ingredient melittin from bee venom in honey or capsule form as Honeybalm For Pets.

Honeybalm For Pets combines pure New Zealand honey with melittin in bee venom and deep sea fish oil containing Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for joint health.

Honeybalm capsules contain freeze dried honey, melittin in bee venom, herbs turmeric, fenugreek and hawthorn, as well as vitamins and minerals which support joint health.
