Wound Healing and UMF Active Manuka Honey

New Zealand active manuka honey is a unique wild bush honey attracting world wide attention for its antibacterial and antiseptic properties.

With many people using Active Manuka Honey with UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) there has been a renaissance in the use of honey, an ancient and traditional wound dressing.

Work done by international honey expert Dr Peter Molan has shown Active Manuka is beneficial in supporting normal healing process for:

  • open wounds
  • cuts, burns, minor skin irritations
  • eczema and dermatitis
  • acne
  • sore throats
  • stomach ulcers and digestion
  • In the past decade Dr Peter Molan has amassed a large body of convincing evidence for Active Manuka's effectiveness from:

  • case studies
  • experiments on animal models
  • randomised controlled clinical trials
  • biomedical research
  • A study for the Central Public Health Authority in London of antibiotic resistant bacteria from all over Britain showed honey was effective against most, including so-called Super Bugs like MRSA, which have proved a scourge against the old and infirm in hospitals.

Among the cases reported is that of a 38-year-old Cardiff woman with a wound which had not responded to treatment over 22 years. Using dressings infused with active manuka honey, the wound healed in a month.

Clinical trials have shown active manuka honey is a good healing option in cases where the infection returns as soon as antibiotic treatment ends, or in chronic low level infection where antibiotics are not recommended.

Honeybalm Active Manuka Cream UMF 15+ was tested by Dr Molan and was found to be suitable for use on newly healed skin and dermatitis around wounds. It is a perfume-free cream which contains the maximum amount of honey which can be incorporated into a cream form, natural oils and herbal ingredients which promote healing.

How Do I Use UMF rated Active Manuka Honey?

    For external use on ulcers
Apply Active Manuka honey direct onto the wound with a spoon or knife, and cover with a dressing that covers the wound and any inflamed area around it.

In some cases it may be easier to spread honey on the dressing pad than the wound as it causes less discomfort.

Apply enough honey so it is not heavily diluted by the wound. It is suggested 20mls of honey can be used on a 10cm by 10cm dressing.

Cover with a preferably waterproof secondary dressing to prevent honey from oozing out of the dressing. Change frequently if the wound is weeping and diluting the honey a lot. When the wound is drier, change the dressing daily.

If an absorbent secondary dressing is used, adhesive tape or bandage can be used to hold the honey dressing in place. (Absorbent secondary dressings soak honey away from the wound and for this reason waterproof secondary dressings are preferred)

For varicose ulcers, use pressure bandaging over the honey.

For minor skin conditions, burns and acne

Honeybalm Active Manuka Cream UMF 15+ skin cream is ideal for minor skin conditions like cuts, burns, acne and irritations.

Containing 30% Active Manuka Honey UMF 15+ natural oils with soothing and healing properties, and a range of other herbal ingredients, Honeybalm Active Manuka Cream smooths on easily and is readily absorbed without stickiness.

Apply directly to the skin or with a band aid or sticking plaster.
