In people with MS, there are three processes going on that normally do not occur in healthy people.
These processes are never the same in any two people with MS. When they occur how quickly and to what extent varies widely.
When the damage becomes significant, persons with MS experience the characteristic symptoms of poor muscle coordination, numbness or tingling, weakness and fatigue and other problems.
Once the inflammation has subsided, special cells within the nervous system begin to repair the myelin that was damaged by the inflammation.
This cycle of damage and recovery occurs over and over in the white matter, often unnoticed, especially in early stages of the disease.
If the inflammation occurs repeatedly in the same place, the repair processes may not be able to "keep up," and permanent damage may occur.
When the inflammation covers a large area, it can often leave a scar in the nervous system, known as a "plaque" which can be identified through an MRI scan.
Most people with MS initially experience episodes that go away, either partially or completely, but return, or relapse, later. Although the symptoms vary from person to person, common symptoms of MS include:
Research now shows MS sufferers benefit from exercise which promotes cardiovascular fitness, a sense of well-being, helps regulate appetite, bowel movements, and sleep patterns.
A 1996 study of people with mild to moderate disability from MS at the University of Utah, demonstrated the payoffs. Regular aerobic exercise—exercise vigorous enough to raise the pulse and respiration rate—increased fitness, arm and leg strength, workout capacity, and improved the participants' bowel and bladder control. People in the study also reported reduced depression, fatigue, and anger.
Bee venom is widely used to treat multiple sclerosis with mixed results. "The Bee Lady" Dr Pat Wagner was treated with many drugs for MS before discovering bee venom therapy which she credits with making her "a new person."
Her account of her treatment can be found at http://www.olg.com/beelady/
Dr Ross Hauser, MD, a doctor practicing with bee venom in his Oak Park Illinois clinic is carrying out a clinical trial with MS patients approved by the International Review board of the American College for Advancement of Medicine.
