Fibromyalgia is a condition that affects muscles and their attachment to the bone, is most common in women and frequently occurs before menopause.

Fibromyalgia is characterised by stiffness and tenderness in the ligaments, tendons and muscles rather than in the joints, which is why fibromyalgia is considered a "soft tissue syndrome" rather than true arthritis.
