Bee Sting Therapy and Arthritis

Bee sting therapy (also called apitherapy) is the therapeutic use of bee products (From the Latin name for honey bee Apis mellifera) for arthritis has been known for thousands of years. Indeed, it is said the father of medicine, Hippocrates, even talks about it.

Bee sting therapy has traditionally helped restore normal functioning:

  • Alleviating chronic pain (osteoarthritis, tendonitis and bursitis, joint and muscle pain, sports injuries, back pain)
  • Rheumatic conditions (rheumatoid arthritis, muscular inflammation)
  • Auto immune diseases (multiple sclerosis, lupus, fibromyalgia)
  • Pet Care (dogs and horses)
  • People seeking bee sting therapy often see specialized practitioners to be stung by bees or injected with bee venom in sterile solution.

However, the development of a new category of therapeutic dietary supplements and personal care products containing the active ingredients of bee venom in honey, capsule or cream form, means sufferers can receive the benefits of bee sting therapy without the pain of bee stings.

The discovery that bee sting therapy can be enjoyed without stings has made a big difference to its availability.

Thousands of people have had good results with melittin from bee venom as a dietary supplement or personal care cream over the last six years, as well as in a pet supplement for joint health in aging dogs and horses.

Happy Families director Tim Bickerstaff knows about bee stings from personal experience - he went through a course of bee sting therapy administering over 1500 stings to his right knee over a period of six months.

With expertise from bee sting therapy scientists, he developed Happy Families bee venom supplements.

Research conducted by Auckland University School of Medicine found that 50% of a sample had improved joint mobility and comfort from taking honey with added bee venom.

Tests also found that bee venom is an effective soother of joints.

There are over 1500 scientific studies on the use of bee venom.

A research review published in the 1998 journal of the American Apitherapy Association by Dr Christopher Kim, director of the International Pain Institute in New Jersey reported the physiological effects of bee venom's three major peptides (melittin, apamin and Peptide 401) have been "aggressively researched."

Another US study showed some dogs given bee venom had increased mobility without any significant side effects.

Those who are sensitive to bee stings should check with a health practitioner before beginning a course of bee sting therapy.

However, experience has shown taking bee venom sting therapy orally or applied topically in cream form generally makes the recipient less sensitive to bee stings than they were previously. If you have any doubts do not use before consulting a health practitioner.
