Sweeten Up With Aphrodisiac Honey

26 January 2006

Surprise! If you want to spark romance this Valentine’s Day, bypass the bedroom and head straight for the kitchen. What you eat (or don't eat) has a direct impact on your sex life, affecting your hormone, energy and stress levels. And spiced honey is right up there in adding spark to the engines of love.

Five good reasons to say “I love you” with honey:

  1. The sweet stuff is a bountiful source of boron (a mineral also found in green leafy vegetables, fruits, legumes and nuts).
Boron helps the body metabolize and utilize estrogen, the basic female sex hormone. Some studies have shown that this mineral may also enhance blood levels of testosterone, the hormone responsible for promoting desire in both men and women, according to MD Theresa L. Crenshaw in The Alchemy of Love and Lust.

  2. Get four hours of high energy with two tablespoons of honey and two 400 I.U.s of Vitamin E. The vitamin E increases oxygen in your system and is considered by many to be an aphrodisiac. Honey is an easily metabolized sugar, rich in B-vitamins, enzymes and amino acids.

After taking honey and vitamin E, do a little exercise to pump the energizers through your system. (Some nutritionists warn not to take honey and vitamin E if you've been drinking within the last twenty-four hours, because it can work in reverse--as a downer rather than an upper.)

  3. Honey spiced with nutmeg heightens sexual response, according to ancient love manuals the Kama Sutra and The Perfumed Garden. Drizzle it on hotcakes for a Valentine’s Day brunch and combine with Italian or California bubbles from the Moscato(Muscat) grape. They are typically frizzante (just a slight bubble) and very light in alcohol (around 8%), making them perfect for daytime drinking.

  4. Medieval seducers plied their partners with Mead, a fermented drink made from honey. Lovers on their "Honeymoon" drank mead to "sweeten" the marriage. Mead is now enjoying a commercial revival. Appropriately the International Mead Festival of Honey Wines is held in Boulder CO every February.

  5. Coffee with honey and cardamom is another “hot” item. The ancients said hot wine flavoured with ground cardamom could revive a dead man who, it is said, would then immediately go out looking for women! Cleopatra perfumed the rooms of her palace with cardamom for Mark Anthony… Combine Cardamom coffee and honey, with our Lavender Honey Baby Cakes for a deliciously sinful coffee break.
